Progress with building work

The tiling is finished on the roof...

And this is going to be the new back porch...

View from the top of the ladder...

And on the inside (eeek!)...

We do have hot water, thankfully...

...and all appliances are still usable.

It's been quite a heavy day, and impossible to get any work done with everything that's been going on.  I retreated to our very warm greenhouse to look at fridge catalogues and try to figure out how to solve my cardinal problems.  No luck there unfortunately, but I will get it eventually.

Our beautiful unfinished kitchen

I'm afraid I failed to do anything like the amount of work I was hoping to do over the weekend.  We had family over on Saturday, and then I worked at the Art & Craft Centre on the Sunday.  As a result, the panda has only just acquired his trousers, and the red cardinal is lost beneath a pile of mohair scraps.

I do have something to blog about though - as usual, due to the builders' hard work, rather than my own.  This is our roof from the outside...

And this is what it looks like inside...

It looks absolutely amazing!  I looked at it and thought, "Right - that's it.  Stop right there.  That's exactly the way we want it", and my mother said much the same.  It seems such a shame to tile the roof and cut out all that light, and to cover up the rafters on the inside.  But, I guess if it rains tomorrow, we'll be desperate for the tiles back.

Tomorrow, hopefully, the rest of the old ceiling goes.

Monster beam

Well, today I made progress with a little red cardinal and a panda bear.

The builders installed a monster-sized metal beam on the hip joint of the extension, added the rafters on the other side of the beam, and the frame for the skylight, built the back wall up to the rafters, and they did something else with the kitchen roof - I couldn't tell you what exactly.

In my defence, there were three of them.  And, I shall work over the weekend, so hopefully my panda and the cardinal will be finished on Monday.

Roof pictures

Ahem... what I said about it being impossible to get a good picture of the work... it wasn't true.

Kitchen roof

There's no way to get a good picture of the progress being made on the kitchen roof.  This is the best - taken from the upstairs window.

We used to have a flat roof, but it had to be repaired far too often - apparently as a consequence of being flat - and we had permanent marks on the kitchen ceiling, where water has leaked through.  So, we are having a sloping roof put on, with a vaulted ceiling inside.  Isn't it beautiful?

That square shape in the wooden struts, at the bottom right of the photo, will be one of three skylights.

Roof progress

With regard to posting on this blog, I'm beginning to feel like I'm in competition with our builders!  This time, as with last time, it is they who have made the blog-worthy progress.  My bear isn't quite finished, but something is indeed happening with the kitchen roof.  It is coming off!

Bear to follow tomorrow (hopefully).
